Q&A

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Deep Sleep Protocol and a sleeping pill?
A sleeping pill (benzodiazepine, Z-drug) forces loss of consciousness but reduces the proportion of deep slow-wave sleep and REM sleep — you sleep without recovering, and tolerance builds. The protocol does the opposite: it removes the physiological obstacles to falling asleep and specifically promotes delta waves, without creating dependence or rebound insomnia on stopping.
When should each of the three products be taken?
Unwind is taken 45 to 60 minutes before bed, allowing time for valerian and 5-HTP to act. Glycine is taken 30 to 60 minutes before, so the drop in core temperature coincides with sleep onset. Magnesium Bisglycinate can be taken at dinner or an hour before bed; it is less timing-sensitive.
Can the protocol be taken every night long term?
Yes. None of the three components builds tolerance at the recommended doses. Glycine and magnesium are nutrients the body uses continuously. The 5-HTP contained in Unwind is the only component for which a periodic break — one weekend a month, for example — is prudent.
Is the protocol suitable during Ramadan?
Yes, with an adjustment. Sleep rhythm is fragmented during the month: the goal becomes the quality of short blocks. Take magnesium and glycine after ftour, and Unwind only if you are aiming for a long sleep block. Avoid taking it just before suhoor if you have to get up shortly afterwards.
What if I fall asleep fine but wake at 3am?
That is the typical profile of a magnesium deficit combined with dysregulated night-time cortisol. In that case Magnesium Bisglycinate is the priority component of the protocol, and glycine helps by stabilising core temperature across the whole night. Unwind, which mainly acts on sleep onset, matters less for this profile.
